This week, we’re featuring Vintage Hunters that will be showcasing their finds at Green With Indie Art and Craft Show this weekend, here in St. Louis. First up is Holly Schroeder from South City Studio. Check out our quick interview with Holly and be sure to visit her booth filled with vintage goodness this weekend at Green With Indie!

Q: Tell our lovely readers a bit about yourself. Is buying and selling vintage your full-time gig or a hobby? How and when did you get started in this business?
My mom is an antiques and collectibles dealer and has also run estate sale company from the time I was about fifteen. I guess you could say it’s the family business. I have spent a lot of time in musty basements and dusty attics over the years working with my mom sorting, organizing and pricing preparing for public sales. Working with her has been a great experience and helped me to be able to discern the difference between collectibles and junk.

I have been selling vintage finds off and on since my late teens. I operated a booth at Creve Coeur Antique mall at one time and now sell my finds primarily on Etsy. I work full-time at a university so I don’t have as much time to rummage as I once did, but I still enjoy a good treasure hunt whenever I can.

Q: Are there any items you’ve regretted selling and wish you would have kept for yourself?
I once had a really cool collection of old vinyl records – primarily jazz like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. About fifteen years ago, I purged the collection and got rid of my vintage stereo to make room for a cd player. The new stuff is space-saving for sure, but nothing makes me warm with nostalgia like old records and the crackly sounds of a turntable.

Q: Pick one and tell us about it: Weirdest, most valuable, or most satisfying find?
As a teenager I spent many Saturdays rummaging through piles of junk at the Frison Flea Market in Wellston. I once found a fantastic deco style dark green vinyl telephone stand that I snagged for $20. It has a bench seat with a storage compartment and a small shelf for telephone books. I gifted it to my mother who was thrilled and still owns it today!
