Today we celebrate Near Miss Day, the anniversary of March 22, 1989- the day the 4581 Asclepius asteroid passed by the Earth at a distance of some 700,000 km, causing a bit of a stir. Some astronomers say that had the asteroid hit Earth, the impact would have been equivalent to one Hiroshima-sized atomic bomb detonating every second for 50 days. Now, that’s a serious near-miss!

The geek in me thinks Atari when I hear Asteroids. We still own the game (somewhere stored safely within the confines of the basement) and I’m thinking of digging it out. For the fans of the game, you can destroy as many asteroids as possible and play the game at Atari’s site. Have fun & happy Near Miss day!

I still remember my Rainbow Brite lunchbox. The tiny blue Thermos carefully held my chicken noodle soup and my mother always included a little note inside the box just for me. One thing about vintage hunting and collecting that keeps us hooked is that these objects had a past with someone else. Yes, vintage metal lunchboxes are very collectible. But, I still stop and wonder about the child who carried it to school each day. What a story a lunchbox holds!

What kind of lunchbox did you carry to school each day?

As I said before, I was a space geek as a kid. Of course, as soon as I saw this handsome astro man, the crush officially began. Major Matt Mason is my kind of spaceman.

About Major Matt:
Major Matt Mason was an action figure created by Mattel, an astronaut who lived and worked on the moon. When introduced in 1966, the figures were initially based on design information found in Life Magazine, Air Force Magazine, Jane’s, and other aviation- and space-interest periodicals. Later, the line would attempt to transition into the realm of science fiction. (via Wikipedia)

Do you still have your old toys somewhere hidden away in the house? I recently rescued my mother’s Skipper and handmade Barbie clothes from the basement- my favorite things to play with on a rainy day as a kid. I never owned Dr. Zira- or Fred for that matter, but I did love to pair Rainbow Brite with Skeletor for a hot date on the GI Joe aircraft carrier. We’ll call it an active imagination, but I still think Skeletor dug Ms. Brite’s rainbow tights.

Browsing through hundreds of vintage postcard images on Flickr, I came across these vintage postcards with images of famous ballerina, Anna Pavlova. They reminded me of a time as a child when I dreamed of dancing on stage up on stage in a beautiful costume. Those days are long gone, but the complete adoration of Anna will stay forever.

Anna Pavlova was a Russian ballerina of the late 19th and the early 20th century. She is widely regarded as one of the most famous and popular classical ballet dancers in history and was most noted as a Principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Serge Diaghilev. Pavlova is most recognised for the creation of the role The Dying Swan and with her own company, would become the first ballerina to tour ballet around the world.
