August 29, 2009

Norge Village Cleaners was a nationwide laundromat chain. In the early 1960s, the company developed these plastic, polka-dotted ball signs, now affectionately nicknamed “Norge Balls”. The dots remind many people of Wonder Bread wrappers. These signs revolved and were lit from the inside. They were usually mounted on freestanding poles but many were also installed on the laundromat’s roof. In addition, Norge Village Cleaners featured other plastic signage on their storefronts. These signs are even rarer than the balls now.

There were once hundreds of Norge Balls around the country. Of the less than 50 known to still exist, I don’t believe any of them are still lit. (From “Super Signage” at AgilityNut.com)

For those of us near St. Louis, you can find one of these beauties in Rolla, MO. Road trip, anyone?
